The Barn at Anaway Place

Tucked between Muscoda and Richland Center about an hour west of Madison is the charming getaway of Anaway Place (formerly known as Candlewood Cabins). Anaway Place sits on 80 acres in Wisconsin’s Driftless Region.

Anaway Place offers a collection of unique stays, ranging from a Hillside Cabin to a little Glass House surrounded by lush nature. For guests looking for a larger group stay, our pick is The Barn. The Barn is a fully renovated 1914 Dutch-style former dairy barn that sleeps 12, perfect for hosting a girls weekend, a reunion or large family celebration.

Upon arrival, guests check in on the lower level of The Barn, which also serves as an upscale country store featuring a lovely selection of wine, local cheese, crackers, snacks and other home goods. Owners Norbert and Susan, a delightful couple who have owned the property since 1995 and live in the nearby main home, will likely greet you upon arrival.

Comfy, cozy and welcoming – the sweeping space is thoughtfully created and immediately feels like home. Attention to detail at The Barn is impeccable, from the reclaimed Amish oak floors and the old hay rail that adorns the top of the barn to the twinkling evening alfresco lights and Scandinavian-inspired wood stove. We love the homage to Norbert’s mother, who settled here from Germany and has her beautiful artwork on display in almost every room.

Choose any corner, nook, cranny or wide-open space and settle in for a relaxing respite in the country. The Barn’s open top-level fully equipped kitchen is the perfect place for a group dinner or brunch around the large table. Then settle in for board games, fireside chats or bring a favorite book to enjoy in the loft area. Four bedrooms offer space for everyone to sleep comfortably, and The Barn is equipped with four bathrooms, various lounging spaces inside and a large outdoor area with a fire pit and adorable former silo turned patio. Do not forget to melt those troubles away in the two gorgeous soaking tubs, a must-do on your stay!

Guests can utilize the free Wi-Fi, but cell phone service is a little sparse and for good reason; we recommend you disconnect your device and reconnect with nature and yourself on any of the number of property hiking trails. Deer and other wildlife abound in this rolling valley, and listen closely for the call of owls in the distance.

Perfect during all seasons, The Barn will leave groups feeling peaceful, recharged and inspired by this wondrous Wisconsin retreat.

Additional amenities include wheelchair and elevator accessibility, a charcoal grill and split wood for a nominal fee.

Advanced booking is recommended (especially for peak holiday times) and requires a two-night minimum stay. Reservations and more information can be found at anaway.com/reservations.
