Maxwell Mansion in Lake Geneva

Maxwell Mansion is an upscale bespoke historic mansion hotel, with period/antique furnishings, rustic-chic and barn-themed decor, updated technology, a speakeasy, cocktail bars and lounges, and ballroom, located in downtown Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Lake Geneva is one of our favorite places to visit in the summer and Maxwell Mansion is a fabulous place to stay there. We love the historic charm and history of the mansion and it is just a short walk from the lakefront and downtown shops and restaurants. If you prefer to not walk, you can catch a ride in the classic Maxwell Mansion Buggy.

History

The mansion was originally built in 1856 by prominent Chicago Surgeon and real estate prospector Dr. Philip Maxwell. The property was rescued from total dereliction in the late 1970′s by Ruth Ann and Christopher Brown who made it their home and established it as a five room bed and breakfast for more than two decades. In 2012, Andrew Fritz of Lake Geneva’s Baker House 1885 began a 3 year renovation that would make Maxwell Mansion what it is today. The completed boutique resort now encompasses three acres of gardens, lounges, outdoor fireplaces, a heated pool, croquet and bocce ball amusement and 30 luxury hotel rooms steeped in history and renewed with dramatic Gilded Age grander.

Accommodations

The Historic Mansion offers six traditional style rooms with exquisite antiques, en-suite baths and old world sophistication, while the Carriage House & Stable Suites are much more modern and dramatically designed with an equestrian “urBarn” (urban/barn) style with unique furnishings, sleek accents and reclaimed Wisconsin barn finishes.

The Carriage House offers a combination of King and Queen rooms designed to appeal to all types of travelers. Experience full relaxation with memory foam mattresses, luxury linens, in-room two person whirlpool tubs and chromatherapy lighting.

The most luxurious rooms are located in the Stables with Dutch door access, heated floors, two person peek-a-boo steam showers and their most decadent decor pieces. All rooms mix century-old charm with modern sophistication, full with amenities and personal touches to make your stay completely indulgent and satisfying.

Dining

While Maxwell Mansion doesn’t have a full restaurant on property, they do have several great options for cocktails. The 1880’s Apothecary (a tribute to our original owner Dr. Philip Maxwell) offers drinks served from Erlenmeyer flasks and Mixologists create elixirs from their fresh herb garden. The large glass pane windows of the Apothecary overlook the garden lounge with several outdoor fireplaces and Bocce Ball court to enjoy with friends.

Speakeasy

One of our favorite things about the Maxwell Mansion is the Speakeasy. Accessible through a secret entrance only with the correct password, the Speakeasy is located in the basement of the mansion. You will truly feel like you have stepped back in time.

For additional dining options, Maxwell Mansion is just minutes from downtown Lake Geneva restaurants, one of our favorites being Oakfire, serving delicious pizzas with lakefront views.
