Fab Philanthropists

Crissi Bates

Founder of Jackson House Milwaukee Inc.

Jackson House Milwaukee Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that’s committed to serving as an agent for change in the Milwaukee community and beyond. Through thoughtful programming, the nonprofit is helping to lead the way in the development of strong, thriving neighborhoods.

What motivates you to pursue this kind of philanthropy? As a young, African-American, single mother living on Milwaukee’s north side, the odds have not always been in my favor. I grew up in the foster care system. I have constantly had to battle the system and defy the statistics usually placed upon so many of dealing with similar issues. These low moments in my life have not deterred me but instead inspire me to help others. In 2018, I created Jackson House Milwaukee Inc. as a vessel for those of us in the community to help improve our city one deed at a time.

You’re an inspiration to so many — who has most inspired you? My son inspired me. I’m constantly reminded what it’s like to be young and carefree again and to thrive on exploration. I love waking up in the morning and just being excited for the day ahead. It becomes contagious, and I believe it makes me a better human and I hopefully help make others get excited for their own adventures.

Best advice for someone looking to give back and get involved in their community: Find your purpose and mission. There are so many important causes out there that always need volunteers to support the work they’re doing. Whether you’re passionate about advocacy, animal rights or helping the homeless, you can find a valuable way to donate your time.

What impact do you most hope to leave on the world? I believe God put me here to change the world. When I first realized that was my purpose, I thought wow, that’s a big task, and I was a bit afraid I wouldn’t be able to fulfill it. As I’ve gotten older, I realize you don’t have to do grand gestures to change the world. I try to spread love and light throughout the world while also doing my fair share of good deeds. My goal is to leave the world a better place the day I leave than it was the day I arrived.
