Fabulous People: Shawn Bolduc

Shawn Bolduc is one of Madison’s “Instafoodie” faves. By day, he is the Director of Audience Services for Wisconsin Union Theater. And his popular sidegig is whipping up gourmet treats and hosting pop-up events (currently online) under his LLC, The Baked Lab. Shawn’s other mega-passion—the performing arts—is the spark for his volunteer work with Forward Theater Company. Learn more about Shawn Bolduc…

First job: I began my career in the arts as a musician. I started playing the piano around the age of 8 when I BEGGED my mom for a piano, which we eventually acquired from my aunt. I eventually earned my undergraduate degree in piano performance and entered the theatre industry as a pianist/conductor/copyist. In my short career as a musician, I had the opportunity to work at the famous St. Louis MUNY, as a music assistant on the 2009 Broadway revival of RAGTIME, and a the conductor of a national tour of Fiddler on the Roof.

Favorite WI restaurant: This is a hard question to answer! I think I would have to say Dan Fox’s Heritage Tavern. The mixture of environment, cocktails, and off the charts menu combine to create the ultimate perfect evening out.

Person who has impacted your life the most: As cliché as this might sound, my parents have definitely been the most impactful duo in my life. Their support and encouragement has been what has guided me along my path throughout my entire life. Although I’ve certainly taken a path they could’ve never imagined, the values and principles they’ve instilled in me have completely shaped me into the person I am today.

Your biggest accomplishment in your eyes: One of my biggest accomplishment is been the slow, steady of The Baked Lab. I’ve dreamed of owning my own cake/patisserie shop for years. Moving to Madison 3 years ago has made this dream possible. In the summer of ’19 I officially launched The Baked Lab and currently offer custom ordered “modern confections for the audacious.” Although I currently focus on weddings and large events, I hope my passion will develop into a more robust operation in the years to come.

The biggest obstacle you have overcome: The biggest obstacle I’ve overcome is the voice in my head that’s constantly telling me I can’t. I’m fairly certain this will be a life-long battle that many people can relate to. I’ve focused on tactics to counter-act this, and continue to push through, because the reality is we all have the tools we need within us to achieve greatness.

Someone who inspires you: You know who inspires me? For better or worse, RuPaul. RuPaul has paved the way for millions of people live their truth, to realize their potential, and to forge their own paths. “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you going to love someone else? Can I get an AMEN?!”

Favorite quote: “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken”—Oscar Wilde
Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Take chances. Take opportunity when it presents itself. Actively challenge the voice in your head that says you can’t or you won’t.

What you think makes someone fabulous: Fabulousity is achieved by creating your own path— and by living authentically and unapologetically.
