Like so many versatile mommas, Hazen really does it all—a public institution worker by day, aspiring writer by night (hence her refreshingly transparent Madtown Momma blog which chronicles her life as a Madison-based mother), and of course, a doting mother 24/7.

What would you say has been the most rewarding part of being a mother? Experiencing the world through my child’s eyes. And being able to recreate some of the magic of my own childhood. Whether it’s the magic of the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus, or getting on an airplane, or going to the aquarium for the first time. It’s fun being able to create these special memories with him.

Best piece of advice you’ve received regarding motherhood? Everyone will offer you advice, but you know your child best. It can be hard to sift through some of the noise of other people’s opinions, but truly in parenting your own child, you need to listen to your own gut instincts and trust your ability to make good decisions for your child and family.

The biggest thing you’ve learned from your children is: To approach the world with a sense of curiosity instead of judgement. My child asks such thoughtful questions and I can tell he is truly trying to learn and understand the world around him. He doesn’t judge what he sees and hears, but instead just listens, observes, and wants to learn more. I love that.

What is your ideal way to celebrate Mother’s Day? I’ve spent every single Mother’s Day with my boys! If there is brunch involved and time spent with my special guys somewhere outdoors, I’m happy. We went to Olbrich Gardens on my first Mother’s Day. And have gone back to Botham Vineyards in Barneveld twice now. They always have live music and you can bring a picnic and just lounge and drink wine on the lawn. It’s perfection.
